What is CPD?
Continuing Professional development (CPD) is a way in which professional
members of ASK can improve and broaden their knowledge of Kinesiology
and related subjects in order to maintain the highest standards both
in practice and in the transfer of knowledge to other students, professionals,
clients and the public.
Nowadays all professional bodies recognise the need to have CPD.
The field of Kinesiology and related subjects is continually changing
and advancing. Qualifications become outdated as a result of new research
and experiences.
Role of ASK
ASK promotes, supports and facilitates lifelong professional learning,
research and good practice.
ASK requires that all Professional members do at least 21 hours for
their CPD which is equivalent to 3 days post graduate training a year
All Professional members will be required to submit annually at least
one case study which may go on to the ASK website, which shows the benefit
gained to their client from their systematic Kinesiology treatment.
This case study will then appear on a special section within the ASK
website.
No personal details of the client will be shown but the professional
member will be required to have notes that may be referred to regarding
the client’s treatment plus the written client’s permission
for the case history to be published.
The professional member may choose whether or not they want their name
to be shown at the end of the case study. However, the professional
member submitting the case study will be able to be identified by the
ASK office.
CPD is mandatory to maintain their Professional membership of ASK
It is the member’s responsibility to submit to ASK each year evidence of their CPD so that they will be able to retain their membership status.
Personal Portfolio
CPD gives the Professional Kinesiologist the opportunity to stay up
to date with current information about Kinesiology research, expand
their knowledge and skills to meet the needs of clients and students
and to develop their own Professional development portfolio –
PDP.
Ultimate goal
A person who adopts a CPD programme to build up their personal portfolio
as a Professional Systematic Kinesiologist will ultimately contribute
to maintaining the high level of service to all their students and clients;
contribute to the high reputation of Systematic Kinesiology, promote
and protect the good name of Systematic Kinesiology and ultimately conduct
themselves with integrity and to high Professional standards.
Does my course qualify for CPD?
Details in the form of course title, topics covered, tutor and related
therapy can be submitted to ASK for approval by either a student or
the tutor at anytime.
Need to provide enough detail to allow ASK to judge whether or not
it is sufficiently suitable or relevant to the Kinesiologist:
· Course name
· Details of course content
· Relevance to Kinesiology
· Tutor name
· College to which the tutor is affiliated
What type of courses qualify?
Day, weekend and evening courses, seminars, workshops, conferences,
distance learning courses (if a certificate of completion is obtained)
ASK members who teach or attend exhibitions which promote ASK may also use this experience towards their annual CPD requirement
In assessment of a course for CPD ASK will be primarily concerned with its relevance to increasing the knowledge of the student in Kinesiology and related subjects and not purely related to enjoyment of learning.
Who decides?
The Trustees can make the decision and / or can nominate a Professional
Kinesiologist to oversee the accreditation of courses for CPD
What does the public want?
They want a therapist who is competent in their field of expertise,
is trained to the appropriate level and standard, belongs to a Professional
body that ensures the maintenance of standards. A Therapist who complies
with the code of conduct and regulations of their association and is
up to date with the current literature and practice of their therapy
and open to new thoughts and ideas to make sure there is continual progress
in their field.
Kinesiological essentials in a musculo-skeletal
practice.
A series of six one day workshops that continue on from where your Kinesiology
training finished which put together, allows you to build a comprehensive
assesment of practically every skeletal problem you are likely to encounter
in 'everyday practice'.
